Toyota Announces Another Recall Related to Floor Mats

Today Toyota announced yet another recall related to floor mats, this time in regards to several Lexus All-Wheel Drive vehicles. Approximately 20,000 “2006 and early 2007 Model Year GS 300 and GS 350 All-Wheel Drive vehicles” will be included in this voluntary recall, and this time the issue is in the plastic hooks found on the floor boards.

Toyota analysts have concluded that after a routine service procedure the plastic hooks can become interference with the accelerator pedal. The mat would, in certain cases, catch the accelerator pedal and cause it to stay partially depressed.

The recall doesn’t end there, however.

Toyota also announced a recall for several Highlander models, in regards to the same issue. Again, the plastic hooks designed to keep the floor mat in place would fail to do that and in turn cause unintended acceleration. Models included in that category are “approximately 372,000 2004 through 2006 and early 2007 RX 330, RX 350, and RX 400h vehicles, and approximately 397,000 2004 through 2006 Highlander and Highlander HV vehicles.”

Most followers of Toyota know that last year was very big for them in regards to recalls, and those are still rearing their ugly heads. From the press release, “Separately, Toyota has amended its recall from November 2009, adding three models to address the potential for unsecured or incompatible floor mat entrapment of the accelerator pedal. The models added include:

• Approximately 603,000 2003 through 2009 4Runner
• Approximately 17,000 2008 through 2011 Lexus LX 570; and
• Approximately 761,000 2006 through 2010 RAV4″

On the press release, Toyota stated that owners of affected vehicles “will receive an interim notification by first class mail beginning in the near future, informing them of the condition. Owners will receive a second notification once the recall preparations are complete.”
